Supreme Court Hearing Tomorrow - Mahmoud v. Taylor Opt Out Case

Tomorrow, the United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Mahmoud v. Taylor. In that case, parents of different religious backgrounds (Muslim, Roman Catholic, and Ukrainian Orthodox) sued Montgomery County Public Schools, contending that the denial of notice and opt-out options related to instruction on gender and sexuality against their parents’ religious conviction violated their religious freedom and parental rights. The parents did not seek to ban the books or challenge their adoption into the curriculum; rather, they sought to maintain control over how and when their children would be exposed to content they believed conflicted with their religious duties to train their children according to their faiths on matters of gender, marriage, and sexuality.

You can tune in here tomorrow at 7:00 am Pacific/10:00 am Eastern to listen.

Our board discussed the issue of opt outs last summer, which ended in a split vote. At present, the district does not prohibit opt outs. However, if the district adopts the CSBA-recommended version of AR 6142.8 (Comprehensive Health Education), parental opt outs for certain topics will be prohibited.

As always, this is just one lady’s opinion. I don’t speak for the board and no one else speaks for me.
